Cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA) is a condition that usually appears in childhood, as this is the stage in which the immune system is still developing. In rare cases, the condition can also affect adults.
The consequences of ingesting milk protein by someone who has APVL can be immediate or occur following a few hours or days. The most common immediate symptoms are:
- Diarrhea;
- Redness and itching of the skin;
- Nausea and vomiting;
- Dor abdominal;
- Itchy eyes and tearing.
In cases of delayed reaction, which occurs well following the moment of ingestion, the symptoms are:
- Bloody stools;
- Constipation;
- Anemia;
- Inflammation in the intestine;
- Reflux;
- Inflammation in the esophagus.
Child dermatologist Camila Reis explains that APVL signs are often confused with other skin irritations. According to her, some observations make it easier to define whether the baby’s allergy is caused by milk protein or another factor. “You have to check the diaper. In the case of milk allergy, the irritations are usually accompanied by diarrhea, ”she explains.
The diagnosis of CMPA is carried out by a pediatrician or general practitioner, and tests may be required for confirmation. In these cases, the doctor will recommend the treatment to be done.
“In the case of allergies, it is always important to seek a specialist to carry out preventive treatments and to control symptoms. In any case, babies should only be medicated under medical guidance, as drugs can mask the signs and make diagnosis difficult”, he concludes.
