Only those who have the ease of a virtual assistant on a daily basis know the advantages of searching and accessing information in seconds, in addition to the power to activate or deactivate different services and devices just by voice commands. However, few people know that Samsung’s entire 2023 line of Smart TVs has this type of feature.

“The voice commands on the Samsung TV are a facilitator for people’s routine, in addition to a broader accessibility factor for anyone who wants to take advantage of all the TV’s resources in a practical and uncomplicated way. Users can select Samsung’s proprietary service, Bixby, in addition to Amazon Alexa,” says Guilherme Campos, director of TV and Audio division at Samsung Brazil.

The configuration process is done directly by the TV, just pressing the ‘home’ key on the remote control to access the TV settings. Under ‘General’, go to ‘Voice’ and ‘Voice Assistant’, then select the Alexa option. Returning to the Alexa app on your smartphone, tap ‘Devices’, ‘Add Device’, select ‘TV’, ‘Samsung’ and follow the remaining instructions to complete the setup.

Another option is to make the connection and configuration for using Alexa on the smartphone. The first step is to connect the TV to Samsung’s SmartThings1 ecosystem through the app, making sure to update it to the current version. Still on the smartphone, open the Alexa app and activate SmartThings for the TV. At this time, you may be asked to enter Samsung credentials, as well as select a SmartThings location and authorize the connection with the Samsung account. Once added, tap ‘discover devices’ (or say ‘Alexa, discover devices’). That way, SmartThings devices including the added TV will be automatically discovered. Finally, tap ‘done’.

On your cell phone, just change the name of the TV to one that can be recognized, such as “TV in the living room”. If you have an Amazon Echo device, you can easily say the given name out loud. If the user wants or needs to change the TV name once added, just tap and hold the name on SmartThings main screen to edit.

To help customers, we have prepared a step-by-step guide to synchronizing the Alexa service and using all the functions available directly on the TV, as well as a video guide on the Samsung Brazil YouTube channel:

Main voice commands to use on Smart TV

Among the main examples of using Alexa features on Samsung TV, the commands to turn the TV on or off, saying “Alexa, turn off TV”. It is important, however, that the TV is connected to the network via Wi-Fi to be activated in this way (the device will not respond if it is connected to a wired network). To change the volume, the user can say “Alexa, volume down” or “Alexa, volume up to 10”. You can also ask for a specific streaming app by saying, for example, “Alexa, open Prime Video”. To select the signal input source, say “Alexa, open HDMI 1”. Customers can also listen to music from their preferred service by asking “Alexa, play music”.

It is worth remembering that with Alexa on TV it is possible to access other information and entertainment features of the voice assistant, such as “Alexa, what is the weather forecast for today?”, “Alexa, what time is it?”, or “Alexa, tell me a joke”, “Alexa, good morning”. In this way, Alexa will respond normally, with information of relevance and interest to users. In addition, it is also possible to control smart products by saying, for example, “Alexa, turn off the lights” – in these cases smart and compatible products are needed.
