Cutlery without a designated place, cups falling from the cabinets, pots forming a tower of disaster and not having a perfect view of your food, you’ve certainly been there, right? This is the problem for many people who have problems keeping their kitchen cabinets organized, which leads to stress and not being able to find our utensils when we need them most. We don’t deny that keeping the house tidy as a whole is a difficult task, but the kitchen always seems to have something out of place.
That’s why we talked to personal organizer (or personal organizer, in literal translation) Priscila Sabóia (@priscilasaboiaorganizer), who shared the definitive guide for you to learn how to organize your kitchen cabinets. See below:
How to organize kitchen cabinets: practicality over aesthetics
Kitchen cabinets can seem complicated to organize, and with so many tips on the internet, we end up making classic home organization mistakes. Priscila says that a very common mistake she sees before offering her services is putting decoration and beauty ahead of everyday practicality. “Sometimes, people have a countertop in the kitchen and some appliances that they use very frequently. Instead of placing these appliances on the counter, they store them in the highest cabinet, where they have to take a ladder to simply reach the toaster and make toast in the morning”, explains the personal organizer.
It may seem silly, but in the end, no one wants to look for the appliances they use most in the farthest cupboards, which can easily lead to disorganization. So, how regarding planning your kitchen around your routine? “Because people want to value a free bench, they forget that the house – and the kitchen, mainly – were made for you to live and enjoy with your family and not to record a soap opera”, jokes Priscila.
And if you’re still designing your home, take the opportunity to build cabinets with doors, always! “I see that some people want to innovate and put a lot of shelves and open things, but this accumulates a lot of dust and grease – we are talking regarding the kitchen, right? – and this brings maintenance difficulties”, he explains.
Prioritize what you use most
We have already discussed that practicality is the law in the kitchen, but how can we implement this in the living room? Start by taking advantage of the space close to your hands and field of vision. “Prioritize the cabinets that are easiest to open – those that don’t require you to use a ladder – to keep everything you use most in the kitchen within easy reach in terms of food preparation, serving dishes and pans”, recommends the professional. Therefore, analyze what you actually use on a daily basis and place it close to you, such as your spices and oils, and leave other less frequent foods and utensils in the cabinets further away.
Always go back to basics
Organizing your closets doesn’t just depend on how you store and separate all your belongings – despite being extremely useful – sometimes everything comes back to basic actions, which always get complicated in the rush of everyday life. “My suggestion is: never sleep with a sink full of dirty dishes. Leave everything clean, and if possible, store it. A sink without dishes already gives the kitchen an organized look”, recalls the organizer.
Always remember, a clean kitchen is an organized kitchen!
Separate the utensils
A personal organizer brought infallible tips for those who don’t know where or how to store their kitchen utensils. “Use the cabinets above the sink for dishes – such as glasses, plates and dishes – and below for pans, pots and appliances”, says Sabóia. For the dishes, do that old trick: place them in piles, as long as they are not too tall and disorganized, separating them by models, such as flat ones, soup plates and dessert plates. This way, you don’t need to move the entire closet to find the utensil you need at the moment, and you will always know where to find it. Dish organizers are also easy to find on the internet, cost little, and help you save space and achieve what you want with greater practicality.
Additionally, Priscila recommends having a separate cupboard for pantry items – such as bread, cans and other foods – which can help you have a better view of what we have available, what is missing and what is regarding to expire. And tip from the organizer: “Use closed containers – that is, airtight – to store opened food, no staples!”
And now follow the golden rules of Priscila Sabóia, personal organizer:
- Whenever you buy something for the kitchen, think: Do I really need it? And if I take it, can I throw what I already have outside?;
- Clean or declutter the kitchen every six months: pot without a lid, burnt or worn-out utensils, among others.
Use the right organizers
We’ve all seen those thousands of organizers on Amazon to put in closets and drawers, but some get dirty quickly and others cause more disasters than there were before. “I highly recommend the wire organizers for hanging cups and also the wires to organize molds and frying pans vertically, saving space and making it more practical”, says the professional.
Do what’s best for you
Sabrina says that everything regarding organizing the kitchen depends on how it is used. “If it’s a family that eats a lot of meals at home, for example, cooks a lot, everything you use for cooking must be very practical and easy to pick up and store,” she explains. However, there are people who barely use the kitchens in their homes – and that’s okay! In this case, you can have a better decorated kitchen, without worrying regarding exposed items that might catch grease.
“If it’s an island kitchen, where guests stay around while cooking, it’s nice to have everything for guests nearby: wine glasses or special cutlery, but if this kitchen is just for preparation and everything is served at the table , the ideal is for all of this serving crockery to be close to the table”, he concludes. Therefore, always carry out an analysis of your needs and realities before investing!
