Digital influencer Brendo Yan da Silva, 27, died following a severe allergic reaction caused by a shrimp dumpling. The boy was hospitalized, but did not resist and had brain death confirmed on Wednesday (26/4), in Natal (RN).

Allergic reactions occur when the body does not tolerate a specific substance, which causes the immune system to react aggressively and exaggeratedly. In the most severe cases, the body’s response to the allergen can progress to anaphylactic shock.

“The chance of dying from anaphylactic shock is eight out of every 100 million cases. The best way to prevent a case like this is a previous diagnosis of the allergy”, says physician Lucila Camargo Lopes De Oliveira, Coordinator of the Scientific Department of Food Allergy.

According to Asbai, in Brazil, regarding 8% of children up to two years old and 2% of adults suffer from some type of food allergy.

See the symptoms of anaphylactic shock:

  • Hives all over the body;
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, face or elsewhere on the body;
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing;
  • Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea;
  • Dizziness, weakness or fainting;
  • Low blood pressure or fast heartbeat.

What to do

In cases of anaphylactic shock, people need to be given an immediate injection of adrenaline. It is recommended that people who have had severe allergic reactions always carry a self-injectable syringe with them.

In allergic situations never witnessed before, it is essential that the person with the reaction is taken to the hospital as soon as possible. “Information is the best way to fight it. Allergy is a serious matter, which is why it is important to recognize the signs”, says Lucilla.

Prior diagnosis

A medical consultation is crucial for diagnosing allergies in advance. Through basic questions, the doctor can assess the situation and request some essential tests. The most common tests are:

  • Prick test or forearm allergy test: an allergic substance is dripped onto the patient’s forearm and following a period it is checked for any reaction;
  • Patch Test or contact test: strips containing a small amount of allergens are applied to the patient’s back and following 48 hours the appearance of a reaction is checked;
  • Oral provocation test, used in case of suspected food allergy: during the test, the patient ingests a small amount of the suspected food and the reaction is verified.
