Learn differently, please! This is what the school of the future could look like

School is yesterday. What do young people really need to learn in order to later lead a successful and fulfilling life? A solution.

Pupils, teachers, parents: criticism of the Austrian school system rains down from all sides. No one is really happy, but breaking old patterns is hard. Experts also criticize our school system. The classic grading is outdated, staying seated is long outdated. Others are also far ahead of us in international tests. School in Austria is no longer up-to-date. Yesterday’s school system prepares us for tomorrow’s future. But what could you change?

New teaching methods

The teacher stands at the blackboard and the students copy. Then one page of the book is read, and there is an essay as homework. school 100 years ago. Unfortunately, it often still works the same way today, although there are now so many possibilities. Maybe students should teach themselves more, learn to learn? Lessons should be more practical, there should be more illustrative material. In my opinion, you learn the most on excursions. An interesting idea would be VR glasses in schools. Studies show that you only remember 10 percent of the information by reading it, and 90 percent when you experience it yourself. I am sure that many things could be made more exciting and varied.

More freedom

There are schools that create opportunities to let students make more decisions for themselves. For example, I would like a flextime model. Everyone has a set number of hours a day to study. Only some start at 8 and others only at 10. Every body is different. For many, getting up early every day is torture. It has even been scientifically proven that 8 a.m. is far too early to study. I realize this is difficult to do, but at least one or two days a week, students could choose when to start studying.

There are actually pilot projects in which schoolchildren can take holidays. There are no holidays like here, but everyone stays at home when they want – for a fixed time of the year. Although this is difficult to implement in everyday school life, one could decide that pupils organize the school-autonomous days themselves. You could legally stay at home five days a year for no particular reason. For example, because you want to go on vacation with your family for a few days or just don’t feel like it. That might also solve the truancy problem.

new subjects

In some schools the subject is already an optional subject, but in my opinion it should be compulsory for everyone: happiness. This should include mental training, dealing with negative feelings, respect and mindfulness.

We should also be taught a lot more about finance. I’ll be honest: I have no idea when it comes to insurance, taxes and interest. This is also the case for many others, although these topics would be much more relevant for our later life than some other things that you learn in mathematics, for example. As new technologies become more and more important, it is important to educate young people about the dangers and also possible uses. It’s no secret that many students use ChatGPT. You have to counteract this, explain the downsides, but also show how such technologies can be used sensibly.

A separate subject on environmental protection, sustainability and healthy nutrition would also be good. That also brings us to the next point.

health in school

Sitting for hours leads to neck and back pain and promotes obesity, which in turn can have even more serious consequences. A good solution to this problem would be, for example, height-adjustable tables. We could stand part of the time.

Probably the most important point: There should be a lot more exercise programs in schools. More sports lessons, preferably every day in the morning to wake up. Many lessons could also be held outside – especially in summer. There is also a lack of proper food at school. Some of the students only come home in the evening. Until then, most of them don’t get a warm meal. There is hardly any hot food in school buffets and the products are often unhealthy. The state should ensure that young people get a warm and healthy meal, even if they have been in school for a long time.

School should develop in a certain way from learning to living space. More leisure activities, more space to relax. We spend a lot of time at school, it should be a place where everyone feels comfortable, where there is space for inspiration and development.
