On Saturday, the Libyan Center for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences published on its Facebook page some information regarding solar eclipses during the next 10 years.
The center explained that a solar eclipse is an astronomical phenomenon that occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the earth, and that the sun is partially or completely obscured, in other words, the moon casts its shadow on the surface of the earth.
There are three types of eclipses, which differ in how the moon blocks the sun’s rays and the size of that, according to what the center published.
total solar eclipse
In the small patch of Earth’s surface in the full moon’s shadow, a total solar eclipse occurs. During this eclipse, the moon’s disk will pass completely in front of the sun’s disk, and then the entire sky will be darkened as if it were night, and the solar corona, which is the outer atmosphere of the sun, will appear.
Half of the Earth’s population is witnessing a partial solar eclipse
This eclipse lasts for less than five minutes, following which it returns a diminishing partial eclipse until the moon completes its transit in front of the sun.
annular eclipse
An annular solar eclipse is a phenomenon astronomically similar to a total eclipse, but with a small difference. The moon appears a little smaller, and therefore when the moon’s disk crosses in front of the sun, it cannot completely block it, although it is located exactly in front of it. Rather, a ring of its rays remains around it, hence the name annular eclipse.
partial eclipse
A partial solar eclipse occurs when the Earth, the Moon and the Sun line up in a straight line, and the Moon begins to pass in front of the Sun, blocking its rays from the Earth, but the Moon’s shadow is too small to cover the whole Earth, so what happens to most people on Earth is that they fall into the partial Moon’s shadow, Where the moon can only block a small part of the sun’s rays from them, this is called a partial eclipse, and a partial eclipse may block a quarter of the sun’s disk, or half, or any part of it less than complete, and may last for several hours.
The eclipses that Libya will witness:
Tuesday, October 25, 2022 (partial eclipse)
Monday August 2, 2027 (total eclipse)
Saturday, June 1, 2030 (annular eclipse)
It is worth noting that looking at a solar eclipse without proper eye protection can expose the eye to harmful sunlight; causing eye damage.
