Election campaign rules! The 10 candidates for the presidential elections of July 28, 2024, must have a place in the media during the electoral campaign, which begins today, Thursday, July 4, at 6:00 a.m. local time and will run until the 25th, according to the regulations published this Wednesday by the National Electoral Council (CNE).

Electoral regulations require that the media maintain balance and impartiality in covering the activities of candidates during the campaign, giving space to all candidates in an objective and balanced manner.

Likewise, “public and private media, as well as independent producers, will give equal participation to all candidates in interviews and opinion programs,” which the CNE “will strictly supervise.”

Starting this Thursday, according to the regulations, candidates and organizations with political aims “may contract the dissemination of propaganda” with “public or private television service providers” for a maximum time of three minutes per day “not cumulative.”

They may also “contract the broadcasting of propaganda” on the radio, for a maximum time of four minutes per day “per service provider, not cumulative.”

In addition, the CNE, together with the National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel), will carry out “permanent monitoring and observation of the performance of social networks during the electoral process, in order to eradicate disinformation phenomena or non-compliance with regulations.”

Furthermore, according to the regulations, propaganda that “attacks the honour, private life, intimacy, personal image, confidentiality and reputation of people” or that “promotes all forms of political violence, hatred and intolerance” as well as “disobedience to the law” will not be permitted.
