Practicing self-care in your everyday life doesn’t have to be tedious, or even expensive. In many cases, it can actually be free, or close to it.

To allow more time in your day for self-care, “you need to focus on moving from the hamster wheel of negative self-talk that’s on our minds most of the time, to a more sensory experience,” says Christine.

Karper, chair of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at the University of Phoenix.

“This is part of what is called mindfulness.” Karper recommends practicing mindfulness by simply tapping into his five senses before emptying his pockets.

Here are some ways you can do just that.

  1. Light a candle that has a scent you love

2. Burn scented oils in a diffuser

3. Warm a moistened washcloth with a tea bag inside and place it around your hands, to mimic the Oshibori towel experience.

4. Rub a smooth stone or rose petals to appreciate its texture

5. Listen to relaxing music

6. Sit outside and watch the clouds or listen to the birdsong

7. Eat your meals slowly to savor the flavor

8. Make a thank you visit: write regarding someone who has positively impacted your life and visit or call them to read it to them

9. Remember a favorite memory and think regarding what you felt, saw, smelled and enjoyed during that moment

10. Look at old photos that take you back to the good old days.

‘IT MAY BE A TWO MINUTE VACATION’

Not managing stress can lead to long-term negative outcomes, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, Karper says.

But, consistent self-care can produce healing hormones like serotonin and shift our mind from triggering stress responses to a predetermined relaxed state, he adds.

And the duration of your self-care activity isn’t more important than doing the action itself, Karper points out.

“It doesn’t have to take a long time,” she says. “It can be a two-minute vacation, two or three times throughout the day. [Eso] It’s enough to have a statistically significant impact on your overall well-being.”
