The Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine was going to strike at objects in Russia on the anniversary of the start of a full-scale invasion of Russian troops. This, writes The Washington Post, became known from a leak of secret Pentagon documents and American intelligence.
The head of Ukrainian military intelligence, Kirill Budanov, according to one of the documents, gave the order “to be ready for massive strikes on February 24 … with everything that the GUR has.” In particular, according to American intelligence, an action was planned in Novorossiysk – they wanted to strike from the sea and use TNT.
The document, which says that Budanov instructed the GUR officer about such an action, is dated February 13. On this day, the US State Department urged Americans to leave Russia immediately, writes The Washington Post, noting that there is no evidence that these events are connected.
On February 22, according to declassified documents, “the GUR, at the request of the United States, agreed to change plans” and not to strike at Russian territory on the anniversary of the start of a full-scale war. Who exactly intervened and how it was possible to convince the leadership of the Ukrainian military intelligence, the documents do not specify.
According to The Washington Post, what happened allows us to draw two conclusions. The first is that the United States, in order to avoid a direct conflict with the Russian Federation, is trying to keep Ukraine from strikes on Russian territory, especially with the use of weapons received from Western allies, fearing that the Kremlin will decide to use nuclear weapons. The second is that Western intelligence services are listening to Budanov’s communications. The head of the GUR, the newspaper notes, is unlikely to be surprised. He himself said in an interview with The Washington Post that he turns on music or “white noise” in his office to make it difficult to listen.
Neither Budanov nor representatives of the US authorities commented on the declassified documents about the actions of Ukrainian intelligence planned on February 24.
