The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, revealed the formation of a committee consisting of Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the Secretary-General to communicate with the parties to the conflict in Sudan and the international community.
Aboul Gheit affirmed, during the joint press conference with the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, on Sunday, in Cairo, that the decision of the Arab League Council regarding Sudan confirms the preservation of the national state institutions from collapse, and the achievement of solutions without any external interference in the Sudanese issue.
And the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, who chairs the current session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, stated that the establishment of the committee aims to achieve a cease-fire in Sudan, and to allow the establishment of safe passages for civilians.
Shoukry warned, at the end of the extraordinary meeting of Arab foreign ministers, that what is happening in Sudan may extend to all Sudanese neighboring countries, especially Egypt.
Shoukry pointed out that any intervention and any effort must respect Sudan’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and preserve its “legitimate institutions” and not deviate from these principles to achieve self-interests or different interests that lead to a reversal of orientation and international law, according to what he said.
Shoukry noted that his country has received more than 57,000 Sudanese since the outbreak of fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.
Quick Consultation Tours
On Monday morning, the Egyptian Foreign Minister will head to Chad and South Sudan, within the framework of coordination with Sudan’s neighboring countries on the developments of the Sudanese crisis and its regional and international impacts, according to what the official spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.
The Egyptian minister carries a message from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to both President Mohamed Idriss Deby, President of the Republic of Chad, and President Salva Kiir, President of the Republic of South Sudan.
The official spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that the current Sudanese crisis casts a shadow over fragile and tense regional conditions, and that its continuation has serious repercussions on the stability of the entire region.
Sudanese call for intervention
The spokesman for the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States stated that the Secretary-General had received a letter from the civil forces that signed the framework agreement, in which they presented their view on the desired role of the Arab League to stop the ongoing war.
The “civilian forces” asked the Secretary-General to immediately communicate with the leaders of the armed forces and rapid support to urge them to stop the fighting as a main priority, according to what was announced by the spokesman for the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States.
The invitation to Aboul Gheit urged the need to reject “external interference that contributes to further igniting or expanding the war,” stressing the need to support the transition to a political process leading to the implementation of a reform program during a short transitional period that leads to general elections.
An initiative worth supporting
Earlier today, Aboul Gheit said that the Saudi-American initiative aimed at reaching a ceasefire agreement in Sudan deserves support.
He also added: “I believe that the current conflict should not be allowed to escalate or turn, with or without interventions, into a first round of war that divides Sudan into rival regions, and makes it an arena for battles that threaten its existence, sovereignty and regional unity,” according to the text of his speech issued. In a statement regarding the university.
Aboul Gheit stressed his appeal to “hold on to this opportunity, give priority to the interest of the country, and seriously engage in talks to restore stability to Sudan and protect its institutions from collapse.”
And Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan announced the arrival of envoys from both sides of the Sudanese conflict to Jeddah for direct talks, the first of its kind since the outbreak of the situation in Sudan.
Talks are continuing in Jeddah between two delegations from the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, in order to stabilize the ceasefire, at a Saudi-American initiative.
Information leaked from behind the scenes indicates that the two sides are negotiating the technical side of the armistice and the humanitarian issue.
Civil parties in Sudan welcomed the Saudi-American initiative, and urged the warring parties to abide by it and stop military operations.
Fragile truces
Since the outbreak of clashes between the two sides on April 15, a series of truces were announced in Sudan, in order to allow civilians to go out to safe areas, facilitate the evacuation of foreigners, and open supply routes, especially medical ones, but all of them did not last for more than hours. Both parties are accused of breaching it.
The fierce fighting, which has entered its fourth week, has killed hundreds of people and displaced nearly 450,000 civilians.
Of this total, more than 115,000 people have sought refuge in neighboring countries, according to the International Organization for Migration.
