This Friday August 4, 2023, on the occasion of the municipal council of Le Tampon, the elected officials have decided to organize a “Citrus Festival” on Saturday August 12 and Sunday August 13 at Parc Jean de Cambiaire. This event is being organized in a particular context since 50 tonnes of citrus fruit risk being thrown away due to a lack of sufficient distribution channels. On the island, the citrus sector would have more than 230 producers spread over 400ha. Many representatives are in the town of Le Tampon according to the town hall.

“This crop contributes to the economic development of the territory. In the current economic context where producers have suffered in recent years from the vagaries of the weather, producers in Le Tampon are finding it difficult to sell their productions in the best conditions, especially since this year, a shift in the harvest has led to an overproduction of these fruits present on all the stalls” indicates the municipality in a press release.

More than 50 tonnes of citrus fruits might be thrown away “thus generating significant food waste, not to mention the financial losses for professionals in the sector”.

To deal with this situation, the town hall decided to set up an event allowing the flow of the various varieties of citrus fruits concerned with a direct sale from the producer to the consumers “at attractive prices”.

The citrus festival will therefore be held from Saturday August 12 to Sunday August 13 at Parc Jean de Cambiaire, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
