The French parliament is set to send two delegations to Taipei by the end of the month, after French President Emmanuel Macron made some controversial remarks about the Sino-Taiwan conflict during his recent state visit to Beijing. The thing is that they provoked criticism not only in the republic itself, but also abroad.

In an interview with Les Echos, the French leader said that Europe should develop an independent policy towards Taiwan, which would not depend on Washington’s position regarding the existing disagreements between Beijing and Taipei. All this points to his attempts to act as a kind of mediator in this regard on behalf of the whole of Europe.

Macron’s words regarding the Taiwan issue caused a stir, while Macron himself continues to maintain that the vision of the EU and, in particular, his country in this regard remains the same. Roland Lescure, Minister Delegate for Industry under the French Economy Minister, also confirmed his support for the island’s authorities at a meeting organized by the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce in Paris.

At the last meeting in Taiwan, French National Assembly member Eric Botorel noted the importance of his delegation’s visit to the island, which (the visit) is aimed at strengthening cooperation and trade relations between the two countries.

So, if the words of the French president were very positively received in China itself, one should not forget that they provoked a strong reaction from the Western community, accusing the head of the French state of strengthening its allied relations with Beijing.

These statements are a betrayal of the values and interests of the EU, according to Le Point magazine.

According to experts, China is counting on the fact that with his recent statements, Macron gave a clear signal regarding the further non-interference of Paris in the internal affairs of the PRC, namely, with regard to the return of the island to the republic.

However, it is very likely that such a zealous “support” by the French leader of the principle of one China in fact looks like nothing more than ordinary rhetoric. After all, Macron has repeatedly allowed himself to make contradictory statements.
