Le Corbusier: Influence on Watchmaking and La Chaux-de-Fonds

Even today, the genius architect, born in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the manufacturing town, continues to inspire the watchmaking world.

His name was Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris. But he is remembered as Le Corbusier, both artist and architect. Disappearing in 1965, he left the indelible trace of a true architectural reflection, purist, sometimes to the point of becoming inhuman or superhuman in his ideal of functional perfection.

Few cities are as closely linked to timepieces as his hometown. At its time, around 1900, La Chaux-de-Fonds alone represented 55% of world watch production. Enough to explain its urban landscape, whose rectilinear and vertical dimension, the marriage between inhabited spaces and workplaces strongly inspired the work of Le Corbusier. The city was also included in 2009, with Le Locle, on the UNESCO world heritage list.
