Good news for Xbox users: they can now voice chat with other players on console, PC or mobile via the famous Discord messenger. A long-awaited feature, ideal for team play!
Within a few years, Discord has become the essential companion for PC gamers. And for good reason: this free instant messaging allows several people to chat in real time in writing (message) but also in audio (in voice mode) and even in video within public or private groups where everyone is identified by a pseudonym. An ideal tool for exchanging and coordinating in team games. But of which console users were deprived until now. A gap filled today by Microsoft, which has justformalize a partnership with Discordmarking the arrival of voice chat on Xbox consoles for Xbox Insiders.
Discord sur Xbox : le chat vocal multiplateformes
In fact, as for Sony with PSN (PlayStation Network), it was already possible to link an Xbox account with a Discord account to display the name of the current game in the online state. But the connection was limited to this information alone. The agreement between the two companies goes much further since it allows – finally! – players to chat in real time via Discord during their games. Certainly, on console Xbox (Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and Xbox One), only voice mode is available, in duos or in groups. But messaging also works on PC and mobile, like Xbox games, now accessible on desktop and smartphone thanks to Xbox Game Pass and the cloud gaming.
Admittedly, there was already a voice chat system to chat while playing on Xbox Series and Xbox One through the Xbox app. But it was much more complicated for a console player to communicate directly with a PC user. With this new collaboration between Microsoft and Discord, it’s now possible! Players will be able to talk and cooperate in their games much more easily, regardless of the platform used.
For now, this voice chat feature is mostly for console gamers. As long as they link their Discord account via the mobile app on their smartphone to their Xbox account, they will be able to make group calls – which is very useful for chatting while playing cooperatively on games like Halo Infinite et Minecraft –, but also see who is present in the chat group and who is talking thanks to the Overplay function. Of course, it will be possible to adjust the volume of each member or turn off the microphones – the famous Mute mode.
