Lazy eye is one of the most common visual disorders in children, and it is a condition that affects the eye’s ability to see clearly.

Studies indicate that lazy eyes in childhood may be associated with health risks later in life.

A new study revealed that adults who had strabismus or lazy eye in childhood are more likely to develop high blood pressure, obesity, and metabolic syndrome in adulthood, as well as an increased risk of heart attacks.

The research team from University College London analyzed data on more than 126,000 people aged between 40 and 69 years, from the records of the British Biobank, who underwent eye examination.

According to Science Daily, 82.2% of them reported that they had persistently decreased vision in one eye as adults (lazy eye).

The results showed that participants who suffered from lazy eye as children had a 29% higher risk of developing diabetes, a 25% higher risk of developing high blood pressure, and a 16% higher risk of obesity.

They were also at a higher risk of heart attacks, even when other risk factors for these conditions were taken into account.

The researchers observed this increased risk of health problems not only among those whose vision problems persisted, but also to some extent in participants who had strabismus as children and 20/20 vision as an adult.

Definition of lazy eye

The research defined strabismus as when vision in one eye does not develop properly. It is a neurodevelopmental condition that develops when there is a breakdown in how the brain and eye work together and the brain cannot properly process the visual signal from the affected eye.

Since it usually causes decreased vision in only one eye, many children do not notice anything wrong with their vision and are only diagnosed through a vision test usually performed at school age.

The results of this study are rare associations linking health traits in childhood and health problems in the future
