The collective of lawyers of the former Prime Minister of Gabon, Sylvia Bongo and her son Noureddin Bongo announced on Tuesday that they had contacted the African Commission on Human Rights, headquartered in Banjul, Gambia, to protest against the violation of human rights. their clients detained arbitrarily, according to them.
« In Gabon the lines have not moved, which is why we contacted the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights », declared Me Gisèle Eyue Bekalé, leader of the lawyers who defend the former First Lady and her son during a press conference in Libreville.
« We have contacted this commission to make ourselves heard since Gabon is a signatory to the African Convention on Human and Peoples’ Rights. “, she explained.
The lawyer clarified that it is a question of questioning this African institution on the inhuman and degrading conditions of Mrs. Sylvia Bongo and son Noureddin Bongo.
Justice impossible
The lawyers have demonstrated that their clients cannot benefit from a fair trial in Gabon. Me Célestin Mba Ondo simply concluded that there will never be a trial for Sylvia and Noureddin Bongo.
The two were kidnapped by soldiers even though they were not wanted by the courts. As a result, only those who ordered their arrest can pronounce their release, argued Mr. Mba Ondo.
Me Charles Anicet Poaty-Amar of the Paris and Quebec Bar, for his part, maintained that the two people were arrested by soldiers supposed to ensure their protection. These soldiers were therefore outside the law at the time of these arrests. General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema having subsequently taken the oath, he became the head of state of Gabon. As such, he must get rid of emotions to assume the role of head of state who must therefore be fair to everyone, including the former First Lady and her son.
« We demand the immediate release of Sylvia Bongo and Noureddin Bongo », shouted Me Jean Paul Moumbembe dean of lawyers.
Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin, was incarcerated at Libreville central prison on the night of Wednesday to Thursday October 12. The day after the coup d’état of August 30, 2023, she was arrested and then placed under house arrest. She is being prosecuted for massive embezzlement of public money along with her son Noureddin Bongo Valentin.
