The court in Arnhem started the trial of Pegida leader Edwin Wagensveld on Wednesday afternoon, despite his arrest shortly after arriving at the court.

Wagensveld is challenging the area ban imposed on him by the municipality of Arnhem in a case before the preliminary relief judge. Wagensveld entered the courtroom at 4:10 p.m.

Wagensveld entered the courtroom through a separate entrance, accompanied by the public prosecutor’s office. Security in and around the court prior to and during the case is unprecedentedly high. Interested parties attending the case in the public gallery had to enter through a separate entrance from the outside.

Wagensveld was arrested on Wednesday afternoon in the court in Arnhem after he dragged a Quran on a dog leash on the ground just before entering. He thus violated the emergency order that was previously imposed on him.
