The family of an 80-year-old Florida woman savagely killed by an alligator last year near the lake at her retirement community has launched a lawsuit alleging the resort was well aware of the presence of the animal, nicknamed “Henry » by employees.
“In fact, the evidence obtained by our company will show that community maintenance workers [pour retraités] “regularly fed him chicken scraps and even called the dangerous reptile ‘Henry,'” the family’s lawyers alleged in a statement Thursday, according to CBS News.
The family of Gloria Serge, savagely killed by an alligator last February at the age of 85, filed a lawsuit on Thursday in her name once morest the Wynne Building Corporation, which owns the Spanish Lakes Fairways, where the octogenarian resided.
The octogenarian was walking her dog near the residence’s lake when the reptile allegedly burst out of the water to attack her and her dog, in front of a panicked neighbor. A surveillance camera captured her last moments before she was dragged into the water.
“A year ago I received a phone call that every son dreads. I might never have imagined the agonizing way in which my mother lived the last moments of her life,” said her son, William Serge, during a press conference, according to the American media.

The family is demanding a jury trial, as well as at least US$50,000 in damages, claiming that the presence of the dangerous animal was “well known” to the property manager.
But according to lawyers, residents were not alerted, and no action was taken to remove the 10-foot animal. It ultimately took six people to remove him from the scene before he was euthanized, according to CBS News.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed, shortly following, that the remains of the octogenarian were found inside.
