On Friday, the Comptroller General of the Republic (CGR) approved the promulgatory decree for law 21,655, referring to the immediate return procedure for those foreigners who try to enter the country irregularly.
According to CNN Chile, the rule also expands the border control area by 10 kilometers and increases the requirements to request refuge in the country.
After the CGR’s decision, the text will be published in the Official Gazette to become law.
The project was dispatched by Congress on January 17. He also had his attempts with former president Sebastián Piñera, but there were no positive results, since at that time no agreements were reached with neighboring countries regarding redirection.
Currently, the measure is only working with Peru. With Bolivia, meanwhile, difficulties have been faced, because the country established that it will only receive people of its nationality.
The National Renewal (RN) deputy Andrés Longton called on the Government to “carry out diplomatic efforts” with Bolivia. He added that “it cannot be that Bolivians do not allow redirection to people of different nationalities. “More than 80% of illegal migrants enter through that place.”
Likewise, the parliamentarian warned that if this is not resolved, the regulations “will be of no use.”
New requirements to request refuge
The new legislation incorporates new requirements for people who enter the country as refugees, among them the 60 days from when the foreigner left their country of origin and seven days to request refuge stand out.
Gabriela Hilliger, legal head of the Jesuit Migrant Service (SJM), stated that this measure “makes access to the recognition of this condition more complex,” because it is a short period because the people requesting refuge in Chile “come from our own continent and transits take a long time because they are terrestrial.”
