Lavrov: The West’s decisions to target the Russian interior will reveal the extent of its understanding of Putin’s statements about the “nuclear doctrine”

Lavrov said after his participation in the high-level week of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, answering a question whether Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statement about “amending Russia’s nuclear doctrine” was a reference to the West: “When we talk about something publicly, especially when the president speaks publicly.” We start from the fact that everyone who is interested in our approaches hears these statements… As for how they understand them, I am not the one to judge them.”

Lavrov pointed out that “the West’s decisions on the issue of allowing Kiev to use Western weapons to strike the Russian depth will show how they understood what they heard from President Putin.”

He added: “We will understand how they (the West) understood this, when it becomes clear in the end whether they will give Ukraine permission to use long-range weapons (to strike Russia), then it will become clear how they understood what they heard.”

President Vladimir Putin recently held a meeting of the Russian Security Council to discuss amending the state’s nuclear deterrence policies.

Putin stressed the need to adapt Russia’s policies to the new reality, and suggested reconsidering the conditions for its use of nuclear weapons to defend itself.

President Putin revealed the most prominent proposed amendments to the “nuclear doctrine,” including a response using nuclear weapons to the aggression against Russia by any non-nuclear country with the support of a nuclear country.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that amending the Russian nuclear doctrine is a clear warning to the West against any nuclear or conventional aggression against Russia, indicating that everyone is aware of the capacity and size of the Russian nuclear triad.

Peskov pointed out that the whole world is well aware of Russia’s nuclear capabilities and its deterrent role, stressing that the Russian nuclear triad remains the absolute guarantor of deterrence.
