The head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, will travel to New York from January 22 to 24 to participate in the UN Security Council debates on conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine Sergei Lavrov “should participate in the quarterly debate of the United Nations Security Council”, announced the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, before the Russian state news agency Tass reported that the minister will actually travel to New York for the occasion.

Maria Zakharova said that in the sessions on the Middle East “it is planned to continue the debate on ways to resolve the current crisis related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict”.

Russia, which condemned Israeli bombings in the Gaza Strip, called for a ceasefire in the Middle East and announced that the escalation could take on “regional proportions”.

Moscow also condemned US and UK airstrikes against Iran-backed Huthi rebels in Yemen, in response to missiles being fired at ships in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.

“The Ukrainian issue is a good opportunity to once again convey Russia’s position to the international community,” added Zakharova.
