Lautaro Martínez Eyes Serie A and Champions League Glory After Stellar Season

Lautaro Martínez Sets Sights on More Trophies After Stellar Season

Lautaro Martínez is riding high following a dream season that saw him crowned champion of both club and country.

The Argentine striker spearheaded Inter Milan to Serie A glory, earning both the Capocannoniere award (league top scorer) and the Most Valuable Player recognition. He also played a pivotal role in Argentina’s triumph at the 2024 Copa América, contributing significantly to the tournament victory by scoring pivotal goals, including one in the final. He also topped the scoring charts for the entire tournament.

Eyes on the Prize

At the recent Calcio gala, Martínez expressed his ambition for the future, stating, “We want to win Serie A and the Champions League.”

His performance last season was nothing short of spectacular. In 33 Serie A appearances, he found the back of the net 24 times, leading Inter to the title.
This season, he has already bagged five goals in 12 games for the Nerazzurri, currently sitting in third place, four points behind Napoli with a game in hand.

In the Champions League, Martinez has made five appearances and scored once, helping Inter secure second place in their group with 13 points, advancing them to the knockout stages.

FIFA Snub Sparks Outrage

Despite his phenomenal performances, Martínez was controversially overlooked for FIFA’s The Best Player award. While he finished seventh in the Ballon d’Or voting, which ultimately went to Rodri, his name was absent from the list of nominees for FIFA’s top honor.

He did, however, land a spot on the shortlist for FIFA’s ideal eleven. This omission drew criticism from Inter Milan President Beppe Marotta.

In a statement to ANSA, Marotta voiced his disappointment, saying, “‘It is surprising and disappointing that Lautaro Martínez has not been considered among the candidates for Best FIFA Player after an exceptional season. His extraordinary performances helped lead Inter to a historic milestone and the Argentine National Team to victory in the Copa América. In both competitions he was also the tournament’s top scorer. Lautaro deserves more respect and greater recognition.”
