Lausanne’s Political Parties Demand Action and Compensation for Delayed Train Station Construction

Lausanne’s political parties and groups made six requests to the Federal Office of Transport (OFT) and the CFF on Monday in connection with the major delay in the construction of the station. In a letter that will be sent to them on Tuesday, they demand concrete actions and compensation.

Underground station

Virginie Cavalli, co-president of the Vert’libéraux du Grand Lausanne, pleaded for a “station which remains a nerve center for the agglomeration and mobility in Romandie”. The parties require constant cadences and assured timetables, in particular in the connection with German-speaking Switzerland. They also advocate a pedestrian gallery between the station and the Flon.

Another request, perhaps the most original: a significant financial gesture for Lausanne residents as well as for commuters passing through the Vaud capital. “We might imagine a preferential rate on general, half-price or route subscriptions, day pass offers, discounted prices, etc.,” quoted the president of the socialist group Louis Dana.

Ilias Panchard, co-president of the Lausanne Greens, spoke regarding the last demand, namely that the cost of the developments around the station for the benefit of the inhabitants and users be entirely borne by the SBB and the OFT.

CFF and OFT open to dialogue

Even before receiving the letter, the SBB and the OFT reacted in a press release on Monday. “The CFF are of course open to dialogue with the Lausanne parties. They will take note of their requests and respond to them directly, in consultation with the OFT”, they write.

The OFT also takes note. “The office will be able to decide on the requests that are specifically intended for it once it has been able to read them precisely. It will analyze them and take the appropriate action”, we note in Bern.
