The Lausanne Underground Film & Music Festival (LUFF) returns for a 22nd edition. From Wednesday to Sunday, the Lausanne festival offers the opportunity to discover a “condensation of exquisite dissonances”.
The program invites exploration off the beaten track. On the menu: 93 short and feature films, including 40 in international competition, 22 musical performances as well as several multidisciplinary projects, workshops and an exhibition.
UFOs in Belgium
“The Belgian Wave” will open on Wednesday. The film, screened in the presence of its director Jérôme Vanderwattyne, tells the story of a paranormal investigation into a mysterious disappearance of journalists and UFO invasions in Belgium in the 1990s.
In competition, five feature films will be presented as Swiss premieres. And 35 short films “will show hypnotic worlds, decipher mishandled narratives, and question identity and acceptance,” write the organizers.
Panoramic cinema
The festival also offers six cinemas, an ancient panoramic cinema process. One will dissect the strange cult devoted to the actor Bruce Lee following his death. Another will highlight the surrealist films of Hungarian filmmaker Attila Janisch. Yet another will be interested in erotic productions in a Greece under dictatorship.
Five documentaries complete the film program. In its Swiss premiere, “Mutiny in Heaven: The Birthday Party” traces the origins of singer Nick Cave’s first group.
Also offbeat sounds
The sound part of the LUFF will take place in the Festival Hall of the Montbenon casino. Lise Barkas will make unconventional use of archaic instruments. Duo from Brighton (GB), Human Leather will mix screams and binary rhythms. Jon The Dog will interact with his “dog” while playing the harmonium.
On Friday, Tarab’s electroacoustic performance will find its raw material in “sound waste” collected the same day. The researcher will also give a workshop on the relationship between object, space and sound, announces a press release.
Several artists, including the Finnish duo An Tul and the clown-alien from Russia Fake Trailers, are on the bill for OFF, the free part of the festival. For the first time, a jam noise will be offered, a participatory workshop which will allow those who wish to improvise together.
