Lausanne Launches Innovative Vélobox Project: Secure Bicycle Parking for City Residents

The City of Lausanne is launching a pilot project to offer sheltered and secure bicycle parking on the street. Residents of the chosen district in the city center can take out an individual “Vélobox” subscription at the price of 100 francs and have a designated place in a box at one of the six locations offered for one year.

“This is an innovative approach at the Swiss level, since there are no other cities known to offer an offer of this type to residents,” the Municipality said in a press release on Wednesday. The district chosen for this test is that of France-Maupas. The Vélobox project will begin in mid-January, it is specified.

This is a test measure before deployment on a larger scale in other districts of the Lausanne hyper-center. The France-Maupas district was identified in 2020 as one of the priority places in the city center, linked to its population density, the type of housing (without premises for two wheels) and the geography of the place, explains the city.

Vélobox aims to respond to the proven lack of sheltered and secure bicycle parking in city center districts, particularly in residential buildings. “We know that this pitfall constitutes a major obstacle to the adoption of the bicycle, especially since the electric bicycle, more expensive to purchase, plays a key role in Lausanne,” says Florence Germond, municipal in charge of mobility.
