The Women’s Stories commission has chosen to highlight, this month, Lauren Culbertson, facilitator at the Alexis-Peyret Center, with an atypical career path.

Born on January 21, 1995 in Los Angeles, Lauren Culberston spent her childhood with her mother, a pastor in Phoenix, Arizona. Francophile from a very young age, which she does not explain, she took French lessons, in elementary school then in high school. She enrolled in a degree in Arizona and discovered the city of Lyon, as part of an Erasmus-type exchange, in the field of sustainable development and in French, of course.

“When I enrolled in college in the United States, I wanted to study in the international field, I knew I wanted to work and live abroad. The world has always interested me, different cultures, travel…” she adds. While continuing her studies, she supervises children as a sports coach in Phoenix. But the desire is stronger. In 2018, she chose to enroll at the University of Pau in a Master’s degree in Geography, sustainable development, society and territory. “It’s easier to obtain a visa when you’re a student and studies cost less,” she explains.

Motivated

In 2019, she struggled with confinement and completed her Master 2 internship in the Billéroise association De main en main. She is pursuing a civic service mission there, with the plan to develop a partnership with Emmaüs. It is there that she meets Maxime, a cook at the Community, who asks her to marry him.

She is applying for a position as socio-cultural facilitator at the Alexis-Peyret Center. Her application is not accepted but she does not give up. Motivated, she does it again and is finally hired.

Today, she serves as a coordinating facilitator for the Youth Space, a reference in the field of prevention, on social networks and the internet. Every week, she leads debate workshops at the Collège René-Forgues, in Serres-Castet.
