Lori Powell, the boutique’s owner, intimately understands the emotional toll of hair loss.I lost all my hair 10 and a half years ago. I have what’s called Alopecia Universalis, and that’s when you lose your hair… from head to toe, Powell shared. Her personal journey with Alopecia Universalis,a rare autoimmune condition, fuels her passion for helping others.

Alopecia Universalis, characterized by complete hair loss across the entire body, affects a small percentage of the population. The National Alopecia Areata Foundation estimates that Alopecia Universalis accounts for less than 1% of all alopecia cases. This rarity often leaves individuals feeling isolated and without adequate support. Powell experienced this firsthand: (when you lose your eyebrows and eyelashes), you truly feel like an alien, and you don’t look like yourself. It’s loss. It’s not really loss of hair… but it’s loss, she explained, emphasizing the profound sense of identity and self-esteem that can be affected.

The emotional impact of Alopecia and other hair loss conditions can be significant, often leading to anxiety, depression, and social withdrawal. A study published in the *Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology* found that individuals with alopecia areata, a more common form of alopecia, reported significantly higher rates of anxiety and depression compared to the general population.

Powell’s personal struggle ignited a mission to create a supportive and understanding surroundings. It was very traumatizing (when I started losing hair). It’s very scary. I just knew I had cancer. That’s what I thought it was, she recounted, highlighting the initial fear and uncertainty that frequently enough accompany sudden hair loss.

From California to Montana: Expanding the Circle of Support

Powell’s journey began in Southern california, where she first established lori’s Lemonade Stand. The success of her initial venture led her to expand her reach, opening a second location in Laurel. Today, she serves approximately 800 clients, both locally and through her online platform, providing personalized consultations and hair solutions.

While Lori’s Lemonade Stand caters to a diverse clientele, including younger women seeking fashionable wigs, powell also extends her services to children like Eva Sweed, who also suffers from Alopecia Universalis. Trisha Sweed, Eva’s mother, a hairdresser from Columbus, noticed Eva’s hair loss shortly after her first birthday. She shared, (When Eva put on her wig), she was beaming from ear to ear. It was actually kind of surreal. She was so happy.

The connection between Powell and Eva is notably poignant, given the rarity of Alopecia Universalis. Powell noted that only four of her 800 clients share this condition, underscoring the unique bond they share. Trisha Sweed observed, I think she had that connection with Lori, since (she) can touch and see someone who is going through what (she’s) going through.

A Community Partnership: building Confidence Together

As December, women from across Montana have sought out Lori’s Lemonade Stand at the first in Hair salon. Mara Stepper, the salon’s owner, values the partnership. I’ve learned so much from her. But, it’s just been grate having her around… It’s just gotten busier and busier, Stepper said, emphasizing the positive impact Powell’s presence has had on her business and the community.

The collaboration between Stepper and Powell offers a comprehensive service. Clients can receive a wig fitting from Powell and then consult with Stepper for a cut and style, creating a personalized and confidence-boosting experience. Stepper extended an invitation to potential clients: I would invite people to come and see what we do here. Visit with our stylists. See if we can help in any way we can, from kids right on up to grandma.

The success of Lori’s Lemonade Stand highlights the importance of specialized services and supportive communities for individuals facing hair loss. By providing personalized solutions and fostering a sense of connection, Powell is empowering women to embrace their beauty and reclaim their confidence.
