Laura Moranwidow of Federico Gertz Manero, died this Thursday, her daughter announced Alejandra Cuevas. In recent years, it was investigated by the Prosecutor’s Office General of the Republic (FGR), a department headed by his former brother-in-law: the current prosecutor Alexander Gertz Manner.
Alejandra Cuevas Morán announced the death of her mother, Laura Morán, through a message on her X account (formerly Twitter): “Today, my dear mother, Laura Morán Servin, has undertaken her most sublime journey, leaving her earthly plane to transcend a luminous existence,” he wrote.
In his message, Cuevas Morán recalled when his mother was investigated by the Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic: “Although justice has eluded us in Mexico, life will find a way to balance the scales. We trust that my mother’s legacy of love and justice will continue to illuminate our path,” he concluded.
Laura Morán’s daughter did not offer further details regarding her mother’s death or when it occurred; she remembered her as “a radiant woman full of love.” The deputy and former first lady, Margarita Zavala, regretted the death of the former sister-in-law of prosecutor Gertz Manero; Fernando Belaunzarán also expressed his condolences.
Why was Laura Morán investigated by the FGR?
In August 2015, Federico Gertz Manero, brother of the current prosecutor, died at the age of 82 due to a series of health problems. Laura Morán and Alejandra Cuevas stated that he suffered a fall inside his home; while Alejandro Gertz accused that his brother suffered abandonment and that his health worsened.
The investigations into the causes of the death of Federico Gertz Manero began in 2015, however, until July 2020, a Public Ministry belonging to the Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic issued an arrest warrant once morest Laura Morán and Alejandra Cuevas, The latter was arrested that same month.
Alejandra Cuevas Morán was sent to the prison Santa Martha Acatitla, while his mother Laura Morán was never sent to a prison despite having an arrest warrant once morest her. Cuevas Morán’s children filed a series of appeals and the matter ended up in the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN).
It was not until March 2022, when Alejandra Cuevas Morán was released, following Minister Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena proposed a project to suspend the judicial processes once morest her and her mother Laura Morán. At that time, Cuevas announced that she was only looking to rebuild as a family.
