Is the Porsche 911 the oldest sports car? Not exactly since the Chevrolet Corvette has been around longer than it does. The American also beats the German in the register of the number of vehicles produced, knowing that it was already celebrating its million and a half units sold in 2009 while the 911 only reached one million in 2017. But the sports car from the Zuffenhausen brand has always served as an absolute reference for all the other brands since it entered production in 1964. It is even commonly considered as the “best sports car in the world” thanks to its driving sensations, its comfort and great versatility.
The Retromobile 2023 show will be the opportunity to launch the celebrations around the 60th anniversary of the legendary model. With a little advance since the 901 was unveiled for the first time at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show in September and its production did not begin until September 1964. It was not until November 1964 that the 901 was renamed 911, so as not to offend Peugeot, which took a dim view of this registration number resembling its own.
