Launch of IHU Infiny in Nancy: A Revolutionary Approach to Healing Inflammatory Bowel Disease

“Who would’ve believed that ?” mischievously launches Pr Laurent Peyrin-Biroulet, world specialist in IBD, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, at the University Hospital of Nancy. It is, however, a reality: the new University Hospital Institute of Nancy (IHU Infiny) has been officially launched this Thursday at the Prouvé center.

Nancy is one of the 12 labeled IHUs in France, centers of excellence in research. One in ten French people suffers from these conditions, such as Crohn’s disease, and there is no cure. The objective of the IHU is therefore to allow patients to live a normal life and to open for them a prospect of healing.

Diseases of rich countries

Within the Nancy CHRU, 150 people are already working directly or indirectly on IBD. Future research will focus in particular on the prevention of IBD. “We can see that it is not genetics that explains them”explains Laurent Peyrin-Biroulet, gastroenterologist, hepatologist and project leader for ten years.

“You go from a poor country to a rich and booming country, inflammatory diseases explode. So it’s on our plate, our environment. When we eat badly, fast food, ultra-processed foods, lack fiber, not enough fruit and vegetables, lack of physical activity: all of this attacks our intestine and one day, our intestine can’t take it anymore and will develop a chronic inflammatory disease.

In terms of outreach, Nancy is entering the world chessboard with the creation of this IHU: “We are already quite visible on the national and international level”emphasizes Professor Peyrin-Biroulet, “but this building, this structuring, it’s true that we talk regarding it more and more!”

A pride therefore but also responsibility to patients. “It obliges us but these are very, very good obligations”underlines the doctor-researcher, “It’s an exceptional human adventure, challenges to take up which are magnificent. With, at the end of this chain, patients who are waiting for us. That’s our job as doctors, it’s extraordinary.”

The project, led by the CHRU, Inserm Est, the University of Lorraine and the metropolis of Greater Nancy, is committed over ten years with an envelope of 20 million euroshalf of the State and the other half of the communities.
