Latvia’s Military Parade Marks 106th Anniversary: Celebrating Heritage and Unity

Latvia’s Military Parade: All the Pageantry with a Dash of Fun!

Ah, November 18th! A date for Latvians to prance around in uniforms, showing off not just their military might but also their ability to align in a straight line. One can only applaud the armed forces of Latvia and its allies as they gear up for a parade that sounds as grand as a royal wedding but with fewer soufflés and more tanks!

Now, let’s break this down. Approximately 1,500 soldiers, national guardsmen, policemen, and even some firefighters (because who doesn’t like the idea of seeing an outlet for building a strong arm while putting out fires?) will strut their stuff in Riga. And who’s leading this military menagerie? None other than Colonel Antonina Blodone, making her debut as the first woman to command this grand display. Talk about breaking glass ceilings—she’s got a whole parade of soldiers underneath her!

The parade is not just Latvian, oh no! It’s a veritable international fair, featuring a smorgasbord of allies from Albania to Spain (and yes, the U.S. has sent troops—just like they do to every global kegger!). Grab your popcorn because you’ll also get a glimpse of Ukrainians making their third appearance. It’s like the Eurovision Song Contest but with more camo and fewer questionable outfits!

“The parade will feature the Joint Response Force, a British-led initiative, for the first time.”

And what would a military parade be without a dramatic demonstration of firepower? Expect everything from tanks to helicopters to a bunch of guys in camo who look like they’re trying out for the next action movie. You know it’s serious when you have Black Hawk helicopters flying past. “Fly low and carry big guns” seems to be the motto here. Who doesn’t love the sight of a helicopter showcasing the national flag while you quietly wonder if it’s possible to lose your lunch from sheer excitement?

And as if that wasn’t enough, Latvia will be showing off some impressive technical hardware as well. Expect three An-2 planes making a colorful smoke display. Because nothing says “freedom” like colorful clouds in the sky. Will it be reminiscent of a child’s birthday party? Probably! But hey, who doesn’t love a bit of flair?

“During the parade, four ‘Eurofighter’ jet planes, which participate in patrolling the airspace of the Baltic States as part of the NATO mission, will also fly over.”

Lastly, let’s not forget the pièce de résistance: a twenty-one gun salute. Or should I say, a twenty-one nation salute? Quite an ambitious effort, but can’t help but think that may come off a bit like trying to get a group photo of a twenty-one-member family reunion—complete chaos!

To all of you who can’t make it, fear not! You can watch this spectacular display live on Latvian Television. Not quite the same as being there, but at least you can enjoy it from your couch without the risk of sunburn or stepping in something unsightly!

So here’s to Latvia—a country that knows how to throw a parade, honors its history, and manages to keep it all entertaining. This November 18th, let us wish Colonel Blodone good luck, enjoy the flamboyant display of military prowess, and maybe, just maybe, dream of a world where we can all just get along without parading around in military gear!

On Monday, November 18, at 1:30 p.m. in Riga, a grand military parade will celebrate the 106th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia, featuring a collaboration between the armed forces of Latvia and its allied nations, along with institutions under the Ministry of the Interior and the dedicated units of the Young Guard.

The event will showcase approximately 1,500 participants, including soldiers, members of the National Guard, police, border guards, firefighters, and youth guards. The parade will be commanded by Colonel Antoņina Bļodone, the first woman to take charge of this significant occasion, while the parade will be officially accepted by President Edgars Rinkēvičs, Minister of Defense Andris Spruds, and the commander of the National Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Leonid Kalniņš.

The prestigious responsibility of leading the parade falls to the Latvian flag platoon, with the honor this year going to the Headquarters Battalion of the National Armed Forces. Notably, soldiers from allied countries including Albania, Canada, Czech Republic, Estonia, Iceland, Italy, Lithuania, Montenegro, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and the USA will participate alongside the Latvian troops in this patriotic display. For the third consecutive year, a Ukrainian flag group will also join the procession, reflecting ongoing international solidarity.

In a historic first, the parade will feature the Joint Response Force, a British-led military initiative.

The Canada-led NATO multinational brigade stationed in Latvia will also play a central role in the event, further emphasizing the importance of international cooperation. From the Latvian side, various representatives from the National Armed Forces will take part, including units from the State Border Guard, State Police, and the State Fire and Rescue Service, along with the Colonel Oskars Kalpak Vocational High School and the Youth Guard.

The parade will culminate in a spectacular showcase of military hardware, featuring the latest armaments and transport utilized by both Latvian and allied armed forces. This demonstration will be accentuated by an impressive aerial display, contingent upon favorable weather. Notably, two Latvian “Black Hawk UH-60M” helicopters will fly the national flag for the very first time during the parade, joined by three US “UH60 Black Hawk” helicopters, two “CH47 Chinook” helicopters, and two Canadian “CH146 Griffon” helicopters. The State Border Guard will also contribute by sending two “Agusta” helicopters – one “AW109” and one “AW119”. Additionally, three “An-2” planes are set to perform a smoke demonstration, painting the Latvian sky in the national colors, while the national airline “Air Baltic” will be represented by an “Airbus A220-300” aircraft adorned in the colors of Latvia.

Furthermore, four “Eurofighter” jets will soar overhead, participating in the surveillance of Baltic airspace as part of NATO’s mission.

A wide array of military equipment from the Latvian Armed Forces, along with armored vehicles from allied nations, will be prominently displayed, providing a compelling insight into the nation’s defense capabilities. During this vibrant ceremony, the 17th Combat Support Battalion of the National Guard will honor the anniversary of Latvia’s independence proclamation with a traditional twenty-one gun salute from the AB dam. The parade will be broadcast live on Latvian Television, as well as through Latvian Radio and “TV24.” Additionally, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the day of the parade, there will be an exhibition showcasing military equipment at the Riga passenger port, while a parade dress rehearsal is scheduled for Sunday, November 17, along the waterfront.
