Latvian Neo-Soul Band “Tepat” Competes for Eurovision Spot

Latvian Neo-Soul Group “Tepat” Vies for Eurovision Spot

The Latvian music scene is buzzing with excitement as the band “Tepat” sets their sights on the prestigious Eurovision Song Contest. This dynamic six-piece ensemble, known for their unique neo-soul sound and electrifying live performances, has captured the attention of both critics and fans alike.

Their journey to Eurovision began with an unexpected and thrilling surprise. “The feelings upon learning that we entered the ‘Supernova’ song contest were, of course, very pleasant,” reflects A. Žabris, a member of the band. “Even now, when we see our name among all the greats of music, it feels like unreality.” The band is channeling this excitement into creating a memorable and unforgettable performance for the competition.

“We’re intensely working on the development of the performance,” explains Žabris. “For it to be flawless, to bring maximum enjoyment for the audience, and maximum satisfaction for us.”

“Tepat” views the competition as a prized opportunity to share their music with a broader audience. “We believe it’s a great opportunity for a young group like us to reach a wide audience, as well as to gain new and interesting experience.”

Their song “Sadzejot,” meaning “planting” in English, delves into the intricate tapestry of unspoken feelings and emotions. “It’s about unsaid words and our wide world of emotions,” says Andris, another member of the band. “There are times when we need to tell someone what’s happening inside us, but we cannot find the right words to convey this message to the person standing across from you. Although we have a lot to say, sometimes a voice in our head whispers ‘is it worth it?’, but over time these repressed words and feelings turn into a time bomb.”

The band’s distinctive sound blends the soulful melodies of neo-soul with elements of other genres, creating a captivating and innovative musical landscape. Each member brings their own expertise and passion to the table.

“Tepat” boasts a roster of seasoned musicians, all of whom have honed their skills through years of jazz training and performance experience. Madara Dzene lends her powerful vocals, while Matīss Barons weaves intricate keyboard melodies, Eduards Bariss adds depth with his guitar riffs, Krišjānis Laizāns anchors the rhythm section on bass guitar, Enriko Korvisons contributes soulful saxophone and vocals, and A. Žabris brings the groove with percussion.

The band members have known each other for years, forging strong bonds that translate into a palpable chemistry onstage.

Their musical journey is fueled by a constant desire to explore new sonic territories. “The band is constantly looking for new sounds, improvising and experimenting,” says Žabris. This adventurous spirit shone through in their 2024 debut single “Not Close enough” and the mini-album “Saldāks par vīnu,” both of which showcased their evolving sound and songwriting prowess.

“Tepat” now finds themselves vying for a spot amongst some of Latvia’s most renowned artists in the “Supernova” semi-finals. The competition boasts a stellar lineup, including past winners like the group “Citi zēni” and Justs, as well as well-established acts like “Chris Noah,” Markus Riva, “Tautumeitas,” and Toms Kalderauskis. Entry into the semi-finals is determined by a jury composed of prominent figures in the Latvian music industry, events, television, and international professionals.

The pressure is on, but “Tepat” embraces the challenge with determination and excitement. The winner of the “Supernova” competition, chosen through a unique blend of jury and audience votes on February 8th, will have the incredible opportunity to represent Latvia at the international Eurovision Song Contest in Basel, Switzerland in May.
