Denis M. was sentenced to 13 years in prison for manslaughter by the Waldshut regional court (D). For a period of more than seven months, he refused to make any statements during the criminal investigations and in court regarding the events on the evening of June 8, 2023 on the banks of the Rhine near Jestetten.

It was only on the eighth and final day of the trial before the verdict was announced that the 39-year-old Latvian surprisingly broke his silence. He confessed to killing wild camper Severin H. (31). However, the motive remains unknown, as the Tamedia newspapers write.

In mid-June, a lifeless man was found on the banks of the Rhine on the Swiss border. As the Freiburg police announced, the victim’s cause of death was found to be a traumatic brain injury. Several injuries to the head and facial area were identified. The German police also announced that the man found lived in the canton of St. Gallen.

According to the investigation, the alleged perpetrator hit the victim’s head and face at least eight times with a one-meter-long log. The motive is still unclear; the two men met for the first time that day.
