A court in Latvia on Wednesday sentenced Ilmars Rimsevics, former president of the country’s Central Bank and former member of the governing council of the European Central Bank (ECB), to six years in prison for corruption.
The Jurmala City Court also ordered the confiscation of his “illegally obtained” real estate.
The court also sentenced businessman and politician Maris Martinsons to five years in prison for complicity in corruption. Both men told the press they would appeal.
Mr. Rimsevics headed the Central Bank of Latvia from 2001 until 2018, when he was arrested on corruption charges.
According to the prosecution, two anonymous shareholders of Trasta Komercbanka, a Latvian bank closed in 2016 for money laundering and fraud, had accused Mr. Rimsevics of having asked for a bribe to keep the banking establishment afloat.
Mr. Rimsevics became a member of the ECB’s governing council when Latvia joined the euro zone in 2014. He held this position until the end of the 2010s.
