After record rainfall, many residents in Latvia were forced to evacuate due to severe flooding. The municipal government of the central Latvian city of Jelgava said on Sunday that areas in neighboring Lithuania had been “flooded and excess water has now reached the Jelgava region through the Svet River”. “Residents must be prepared to evacuate,” the statement said.
Many roads in the area remain closed for the time being. “Normally, the meadows along the River Svet are pastures where cows graze,” farmer Aigars Karklins said on Sunday. “The ducks are swimming on the country roads now,” he added.
According to the Latvian Meteorological Service, the city of Karnšems received more rainfall in one day last week than normal in two months. In the Baltic Sea resort of Jurmala, tens of thousands of trees were uprooted and houses were damaged by the violent storm. Cellars were flooded and train traffic was disrupted.
