The Latvian Investment and Development Agency (LIAA) and the Israel Innovation Authority have signed a cooperation agreement aimed at encouraging bilateral projects in the field of innovation and technological development, reports Media Labs of Latvia.
The agreement will allow entrepreneurs, researchers and organizations from both countries to connect and work together on the same challenges, be it climate, green energy, health or biotechnology.
Kaspars Rožkalns, director general of the LIAA, believes that the famous “startup nation” that is Israel has countless innovative solutions to offer.
The aim of the new agreement is to create “such a synergy between Latvia and Israel that 1+1 would be more than 2”, Rožkalns said.
“Latvia is able to provide access to the European market, great infrastructure for research and development and access to funding for Israeli startups and scientists. I am sure that Latvian innovations can be interesting for the Israeli technological environment. Latvian start-ups seek to gain international exposure and enter new global markets, where Israel is unquestionably a gateway to the global economy,” Rožkalns said.
On the day the agreement was signed, Dr. Ami Applebaum, Chairman of the Israel Innovation Authority, said: “By joining forces, Israel and Latvia are getting closer: “By joining forces, Israel and Latvia can leverage each other’s strengths and create a strong alliance that combines innovation with the prowess of traditional industry. This collaboration opens up exciting opportunities for knowledge exchange, technology transfer and the fusion of cutting-edge advances with established industry practices. Together, we will spur economic growth, create jobs and propel our nations into a brighter future.”
Latvia and Israel will announce calls for joint project proposals and will co-finance successful initiatives. The calls for projects will be preceded by matchmaking events aimed at connecting Latvian and Israeli entrepreneurs and businesspeople.
The agreement will also open up new possibilities for Latvian and Israeli ecosystem players to create consortia and participate in special programs funded by the European Union, such as Eureka or Horizon, where partnerships are a prerequisite for the success of demands and access to large budgets.
