Asuncion, IP Agency.- More than 170 students from various Latin American countries visited the protected areas of Itaipu Binacional, as part of the “XVIII Latin American Meeting of Students of Natural Resources and Environment (ElernyMa) – Paraguay 2024.”

The event, organized by the UNA delegation of Paraguay and the Association of Environmental Engineering Students (Aeciam), was attended by young people from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and other countries in the region.

During the tour, 175 young people received specialized talks on the sustainable management of nature reserves, advanced techniques for forest fire management and methodologies for monitoring water quality in the Itaipu reservoir.

The reserve’s rangers shared their first-hand experiences and provided a unique perspective on the challenges and achievements in conserving these important ecosystems to participants.

Abraham Frutos, from Itaipu’s Protected Areas Division, highlighted the participation of young people from different countries committed to environmental conservation.

Student Brisa Flores, coordinator of the event, said that this meeting allowed students to learn about the management model of one of the most important reserves in South America.

“We have also fostered a valuable exchange of knowledge and experiences between future professionals from different countries,” he said.

The students had the opportunity to tour different areas of the Itaipu Biosphere Reserve, in addition to observing the rich biodiversity it contains up close. Practical workshops were also held where students were able to apply the knowledge acquired in simulated environmental management situations.

Following the visit, the organizers noted that ElernyMa 2024 fulfilled its objective of promoting the exchange of knowledge and establishing collaboration networks between students and professionals from different countries.

The event was declared of academic interest by the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the National University of Asunción (UNA) and of environmental interest by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development of Paraguay (Mades).
