Latin American Society of Regenerative Medicine: Advancing Non-Conventional Treatments and Therapeutic Alternatives

2023-10-25 16:39:55

As the new president of the Latin American Society of Regenerative Medicine (SLMR), the PUCV biologist, Jorge Berendsen Mella, took office, who studied his undergraduate degree at our House of Studies between 2002 and 2007, within the Bachelor’s degree in Biology.

Created in 2022, this organization has been dedicated to research and dissemination of the use of non-conventional treatments, with regenerative medicine of tissues or cells being a possibility of improvement in pathologies that currently do not have conventional solutions and few possibilities of accessing therapeutic alternatives that can support your treatment.

Berendsen, who is also CEO of the clinical cell therapy laboratory Medicell, highlights the essential role that Dr. Luis Mercado, currently director of PUCV Research, played as his mentor during his formative years, who cultivated in him his passion for the study of behavior of immune cells once morest exogenous molecules, an influence that later led to his decision to become interested in immunology with postgraduate studies.

“During my stay at the University, I was able to learn basic biological concepts to be able to perform in larger challenges, such as leading a project by Dr. Luis Mercado, where I was able to create leadership skills thanks to the trust of my mentor. Although the biology degree tends to be more towards environmental, microbiological or animal disciplines, I took a path in the area of cell biology that, together with the opportunity to lead a laboratory, I managed to insert myself into the first cell therapy laboratory at the Clinic Las Condes, where I directed the laboratory under a CORFO project. This challenge, without the training of a biologist and my time in Professor Mercado’s laboratory, would never have been possible,” declared the biologist.

The president of the SLMR greatly values the training that our House of Studies has provided to him and other biologists, highlighting their academic body and career, their location in a natural environment that complements scientific studies and the links with different research centers that facilitate the work development of Biology Bachelor’s students, adding as a recommendation to future students that “one is in charge of one’s destiny and that belief in one’s abilities, perseverance and being guided by good tutors are the starting point for work success.” ”.
