Malaysian Dato’ Windsor John, Secretary-General of the Asian Football Confederation, explained that there were no agreements with the parties to the crisis between the Iranian Sepahan match and Al-Ittihad in the continent’s Champions League in order to bring it back, as some officials said during the past days.
Windsor explained to Al-Riyadiyah, saying: “The Asian Federation does not know anything regarding the agreements that some of them spoke regarding during the past days, and is not a party to them, at all.” Pointing out that “the Disciplinary Committee will resolve the issue of this match soon,” stressing that the committee is moving step by step, and is not in a rush to announce the expected decision, pointing out that it will announce new steps in the coming days.
When asked regarding his expectations regarding when the Disciplinary Committee of the Continental Confederation will announce its final decision, he replied that he hopes that the issue will be resolved before the third round of the group stage of the AFC Champions League, which is scheduled to begin on October 23.
The “Naqsh-e Jahan” stadium in the Iranian city of Isfahan was scheduled to host the match between Al-Ittihad and Sepahan, last Monday, in the second round of the third group competitions of the Champions League, but its start was delayed, before it was cancelled. The Continental Union said in a press statement on its official website: “The match between Al-Ittihad and Sepahan has been canceled due to unforeseen circumstances.” Adding: “We renew our commitment to always provide safety for players and club members, and the match file will be referred to the relevant committees.”
