Sudan civil war enters 3rd week: UN on brink of disintegration

Khartoum (AFP) – Sudanese government forces and the armed group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) violated a new ceasefire today, pushing into a third week of fierce fighting following the capital Khartoum was bombed by warplanes , triggering a fierce air defense battle.

More than 500 people have been killed since violent clashes between Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, commander-in-chief of the Sudanese government forces, and Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, commander of the paramilitary “Rapid Support Forces” broke out on the 15th of this month .

With the situation in Khartoum chaotic, lawlessness absent, and the civilian death toll continuing to mount, the two sides have agreed to a ceasefire several times, but none have been effectively enforced. In Khartoum, a city with a population of 5 million, many people are unable to go out and stay at home because of the fighting, lack of water, electricity, and food.

Thousands of people have been displaced within Sudan or made the arduous journey to neighboring Chad, Egypt, South Sudan and Ethiopia to flee the fighting.

“When the country is already torn apart, the parties cannot fight among themselves for power,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told Al Arabiya television.

Under the mediation of the United States, Saudi Arabia, the African Union (African Union) and the United Nations, the two sides in Sudan reached a latest 3-day ceasefire agreement on the 27th. Expect.

Guterres backed African-led mediation efforts. “I call for every effort to be made to support an African-led peace initiative in Sudan,” he told Arab satellite television.

Sudan’s health ministry said today that at least 528 people have been killed and 4,599 injured in violent clashes, but these figures may not be complete.
