Pope Francis canceled a speech he had planned to deliver at Thursday’s conference, saying he was still suffering from breathing problems following undergoing surgery for an abdominal hernia this month.
“I am still under the influence of anesthesia, my breathing is not good,” the Pope told a meeting of the Catholic Church of the East. He added that delegates would instead receive the text of the speech.
The Pope, 86, underwent the surgery on June 7. He spent nine days in hospital recovering, and has had a busy schedule since returning to the Vatican last Friday, including meeting with the presidents of Cuba and Brazil.
