Latest Updates on Niijima Volcanic Eruption: News, Observation, and Expert Analysis

It is believed that an eruption began around October 21st off the coast of Iwo Jima. The eruption occurred in almost the same location as the 2022 eruption, and as a cocktail jet (Note) was seen in images taken by news media, it is thought that a phreatomagmatic explosion occurred.
(Note)Cock tail jet: It is called this because the trajectory of the plume mixed with dark rocks rising at high speed looks like the tail of a rooster. It can be seen during highly explosive eruptions.
The Japan Coast Guard conducted an aircraft observation on Friday, November 10th, and confirmed Niijima off the coast of Okina Beach on the south coast of Iwo Jima. Niijima is approximately 400m north to south and 200m east to west, and at the time of observation, it was emitting fumarole several tens of meters high.

According to Professor Nogami of the Tokyo Institute of Technology, who was on board the plane, Niijima consists of small-scale lava flows, pyroclastic cones, and volcanic ejecta, and the outflow of lava has stopped and no eruption can be confirmed at this time. That’s it. Eruptive activity can be said to have stopped, but if there is no new activity, Niijima will continue to shrink due to erosion from waves and other factors.

Although eruptive activity has slowed down, discolored water has been observed in the surrounding area. The Japan Coast Guard has issued a navigational warning for vessels sailing in the vicinity, requiring continued caution.
