The Martinique Regional Health Agency points to a slight increase in Covid-19 cases during this long holiday period conducive to large gatherings. This small upsurge is accompanied by the return of barrier gestures.
If it is very discreet at the moment, it still continues to spread. The coronavirus is circulating actively in the territory. According to information from the ARS, the new “sub-variant” of Covid-19 has been identified on the island. Named EG.5, it is the subject of special surveillance by the WHO, which this month designated it as a “variant of interest” due to the increase in the number of cases worldwide.
“You should know that it is something, like dengue fever, which occurs worldwide with an evolution of the famous Omicron. (…) We are each sensitized in our territories and we are monitoring a little more closely to ensure that there are no serious cases. But for the moment there is nothing alarming”, reassures Anne Bruant-Bisson, the director general of ARS Martinique.
Back to self-tests
This growth in cases raises fears of a resurgence of the virus and also marks an increase in requests for self-tests and barrier gestures.
“I fear the Covid because I have children and grandchildren. I don’t want to transmit the virus to them. This epidemic is dreadful, ”worries Patrick, wearing his mask in the waiting room of a medical office.
In pharmacies, there is a marked increase in requests for tests and self-tests.
“For a few weeks now, we have had patients come to be tested because they don’t feel well. Even if we have a dengue fever epidemic at the moment, when they feel that it is a little different from dengue fever they come to be tested”, indicates a doctor in pharmacy.
For the time being, a hundred cases have recently been recorded on the island.
