The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the ongoing outbreak of salmonella infection linked to cantaloupe or cantaloupe fruit continues to expand, with 302 cases monitored in 42 states as of Friday, while 4 people died in the states of Minnesota and Oregon, according to a report published by CNN. American CNN.
According to the Center for Disease Control, the real number of patients “may be much higher,” and that the cases may not be limited to the mentioned states only, because many patients improve without medical care and without undergoing salmonella tests.
Canada had reported 153 confirmed cases linked to the outbreak in 8 provinces, with 6 deaths recorded.
The US Centers for Disease Control and the Canadian Department of Public Health confirmed that most of the infections were in young children and adults over the age of 65.
All quantities of cantaloupe or cantaloupe bearing two brands had been withdrawn from wholesale markets and from many retail centres.
The Centers for Disease Control called on people not to eat pre-cut cantaloupe or any foods or juices prepared from it, if it carries those two brands, calling for the return of those types that were purchased, and making sure to wash any objects or any surfaces that came into contact with the cantaloupe using hot water and soap.
The CDC also urged businesses and stores not to sell contaminated fruit, and to wash and sterilize items that came into contact with it.
It is noteworthy that salmonella is a bacteria that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever, with symptoms usually starting 6 hours to 6 days following the bacteria enter the body.
Anyone can get salmonella, but some people are more susceptible to severe symptoms, including the elderly, pregnant women, children, and those with diseases that weaken the immune system. (Arabic)
