The non-governmental Sudanese Doctors’ Union announced on Saturday that the number of civilian casualties from ongoing fighting in Sudan between the regular army and the Rapid Support Forces has risen to 479 dead and 2,518 injured.
The latest report released Friday by the union reported 473 dead and 2,454 injured civilians.
In a statement, the Sudanese Doctors Syndicate indicated that “The number of civilians killed since the beginning of hostilities has risen to 479 dead, while 2,518 civilians have been injured, and this, during the period from 15 April to current May 5”.
According to several observers, this assessment remains largely undervalued.
The union stressed that “Fighting between the armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces continues for the 21st consecutive day”.
He specified that “several dead and wounded are not counted in this latest report because they might not be transferred to hospitals due to the security situation prevailing in the country”.
For its part, the Sudanese Ministry of Health has communicated a toll of 550 dead and at least 5,000 injured since the outbreak of hostilities in mid-April.
Many Sudanese hospitals are out of service and other services, including communications and electricity, have been disrupted due to the fighting.
Deadly fighting between the regular army loyal to General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and the paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces led by General Hemedti has been going on since April 15 in Sudan. Both sides accuse each other of having started the hostilities.
