Manchester City lost in the Premier League for the first time this season before their Champions League duel with RB Leipzig. The English football champions lost 1:2 (0:1) to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, but remain top of the table for the time being. Coach Pep Guardiola sat in the stands with a yellow card. On Wednesday (9 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the Champions League and on Sky) the Cityzens will be playing in the premier class in Leipzig.

An own goal from City defense chief Ruben Dias (13th) and a goal from former Leipzig player Hwang Hee-Chan (66th) caused the second City setback within a few days. On Wednesday the club lost 1-0 at Newcastle United in the League Cup. The interim 1:1 by world champion Julian Alvarez was not enough (58th).

Liverpool FC’s first defeat of the season

An own goal by former Schalke player Joël Matip in the sixth minute of added time also caused Liverpool FC and Jürgen Klopp’s first defeat of the season. With double numbers, the Reds lost 1:2 (1:1) at Tottenham Hotspur. Curtis Jones (26th/red card) and Diogo Jota (69th/yellow-red) had to leave the field. Heung-Min Son (36th) gave Tottenham the lead. Cody Gakpo was able to equalize for the Reds (45th + 4). Spurs are now second, Liverpool dropped to fourth.

Meanwhile, national player Kai Havertz scored for his new team for the first time in the league in Arsenal FC’s 4-0 (2-0) win at AFC Bournemouth. The offensive player made it 3-0 for the championship runners-up with a penalty kick in the 53rd minute. The other goals for the Gunners were scored by Bukayo Saka (17th), Martin Ødegaard (44th) and Ben White (90th + 3). Arsenal were able to reduce the gap to Manchester City to one point.

Meanwhile, record champions Manchester United remain in crisis. Bayern Munich’s group opponents in the Champions League lost 0-1 (0-1) to Crystal Palace and are only in midfield. Without national player Pascal Groß, who is still ailing, Brighton & Hove Albion lost clearly 1:6 (0:3) at Aston Villa. Ollie Watkins scored three times (14th/21st/65th).

Real wins top game

The Spanish football record champions Real Madrid have regained the lead in the Primera División. The Royals won 3-0 (2-0) at FC Girona on Saturday evening and moved past the surprise team of the previous season in the table.

The goals for the Real team, which had German professionals Toni Kroos and Antonio Rüdiger in the starting line-up, were scored by Joselu (17th minute), Aurelien Tchouameni (21st) and former Dortmund player Jude Bellingham (71st). Defender Nacho was shown a red card in stoppage time following an overly harsh tackle.
