Latest NFL Coaching Staff Updates: Los Angeles Rams, Atlanta Falcons, and More

2023-01-28 08:00:00

The Los Angeles Rams have filled the position of offensive coordinator. Mike LaFleur signs on to Sean McVay’s coaching staff. The Atlanta Falcons have also filled a vacant position

Los Angeles Rams: Mike LaFleur is the Rams’ new offensive coordinator. The 35-year-old was recently released from the New York Jets in the same position. He was previously a passing game coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and on the staffs of the Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns. LaFleur succeeds Liam Coen, who was only allowed to run the offense for the Rams for one season.

Atlanta Falcons: The Atlanta Falcons have found what they are looking for in their own division and have hired Ryan Nielsen. The 43-year-old has worked on the defensive side of the ball his entire coaching career, since 2005. Most recently, he was co-defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints. Nielsen succeeds Dean Pees, who declared his coaching career over for the third time at the age of 73.

New York Jets: Nathaniel Hackett will take care of the New York Jets offense as offensive coordinator. Hackett was fired as head coach of the Denver Broncos in December. The currently 43-year-old previously worked successfully in the same position with Aaron Rodgers at the Green Bay Packers. Rodgers is also rumored to be a starting quarterback for the Jets.

New England Patriots: Bill O’Brien celebrates his return to the New England Patriots. The 53-year-old worked for the Patriots from 2007 to 2011 and has extensive experience as a quarterback coach and offensive coordinator. O’Brien fills the officially vacant position on the Patriots’ coaching staff that was unofficially filled by Matt Patricia last season.

Minnesota Vikings: Ed Donatell’s (65-year-old) time as defensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings ended following just one year. Equipped with advance praise from two good years in the same position with the Denver Broncos, the Vikings’ defense was disappointing for long stretches of the season. Even in the playoff exit once morest the New York Giants, the defense found too little access, and New York played probably its best game of the season offensively.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Buccaneers have pulled the ripcord on Byron Leftwich. In 2020 he was still the creative head of the title offense around Tom Brady, but the last two seasons seemed very bland. The concepts no longer seemed coordinated, and the run game in particular was completely uninspired. Two years ago, the 43-year-old was still considered a future head coach, but now he is unemployed.

Baltimore Ravens: A small era for the Ravens is coming to an end. After four years, the franchise and its offensive coordinator parted ways. The dismissal leaves question marks as the 50-year-old built a very productive offense with a manageable staff this season – until Lamar Jackson was injured. After that, backup Tyler Huntley might no longer implement the system as successfully and Baltimore’s season faded away. Still, the Ravens were just one fumble away from advancing in the playoffs once morest the Cincinnati Bengals.

Los Angeles Chargers: Joe Lombardi is no longer the offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers. The 51-year-old had held the position since 2021 and now had to clear out his locker following the playoff debacle once morest the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Tennessee Titans: The new general manager of the Tennessee Titans is Ran Carthon. The 41-year-old was most recently Director of Player Personnel at the San Francisco 49ers. Carthon succeeds Ryan Cowden at the Titans, who recently took over the job from Jon Robinson on an interim basis.

Arizona Cardinals: The Arizona Cardinals have introduced Monti Ossenfort as general manager to replace Steve Keim, who resigned for health reasons. The 44-year-old worked as Director of Player Personnel for the Tennessee Titans for the past three years.

Cleveland Browns: Jim Schwartz is the new defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns. Schwartz is returning to Ohio following 28 years, where he worked as a scout from 1993 to 1995. As a DC, Schwartz won the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2017 season. Schwartz succeeds the released Joe Woods at the Browns.
