The town of Oupeye in the province of Liège was once again agitated last night, report our colleagues from RTBF.

“The atmosphere was quite tense (last night, editor’s note) with small mobile groups of thugs who were trying to do battle with the police and lure them into real ambushes”, declared this Monday morning the mayor of Oupeye Serge Fillot at the microphone of our colleagues. According to the latter, however, there would have been no arrests or injuries. However, two police vehicles were damaged.

In Oupeye, the ban on gathering more than four people in application since this weekend has been extended until next Monday.

Calm returns to Herstal

However, calm returned last night to Herstal, which borders the town of Oupeye, acting mayor Jean-Louis Lefebvre told the Belga agency.

“With the police, we had taken preventive measures to prevent any nighttime overflows again. Patrols carried out checks whenever something seemed suspicious, ”detailed the mayor.

The Liège firefighters did not carry out any intervention in the area.

Clashes between the police and several individuals gathered around the La Préalle district, on the heights of Herstal, broke out overnight from Saturday to Sunday. No one was injured, but the material damage was substantial: degraded bus shelters, overturned and burned glass bubbles, damaged street furniture, etc. The windows of some houses and a school were also smashed.

These events follow the death of a young man shot dead on Friday in Oupeye by a policeman. The victim had refused to obey a check before hitting and crushing a police officer with the quad he was driving. The latter’s colleague then opened fire twice, hitting the fugitive in the head through his helmet.
