Audiences in May 2023 were marked by major movements on the side of the news channels with once once more a very sharp drop in BFM TV and an increase in Cnews and LCI. CNews and LCI are indeed now the two channels tied, as the second news channel in France, behind BFMTV, according to figures from Médiamétrie published on Tuesday.

The news channel of the TF1 group had a 2.2% audience share (PDA) in May, an increase of 0.5 points compared to 2022 at the same period. CNews, also up (+0.2), is also at 2.2%. Both are reducing the gap with BFMTV, whose audiences are experiencing a sharp drop compared to May 2022 (2.9% once morest 3.4%), on the strength of the previous months.

The fourth news channel, the public channel franceinfo, remains far behind (0.7%).

LCI’s audiences are “at historic levels, never reached since its creation in 1994”, welcomed the channel in a press release. According to her, this success is explained by “its different editorial positioning, focused on major geopolitical issues and on international news”. In recent months, LCI has seen its ratings grow steadily, following focusing on coverage of the war in Ukraine and, more broadly, on international news.

“In 2024, there will be elections in Taiwan, in the United States, in Russia, as well as the European elections, and this will accentuate our positioning,” Thierry Thuillier, director of information for the group, told AFP. TF1.

“We have identified the morning as an axis of progress. She needs to progress faster”, commented Mr. Thuillier, considering that it was “the number 1 project”.
