Italy is hit by an earthquake once more. A swarm of tremors is currently underway in the Naples area. Concern increases.

Naples – Residents and experts have been alarmed for months. Because there is increasing concern among researchers that a so-called “Supervolcano” might erupt in Italy. Recurring earthquakes are also considered warning signals – and the Naples area is currently experiencing another series of them.

On Monday followingnoon around 12:30 p.m. there was an earthquake in the Phlegraean Fields near Naples in the south of Italy the earth once more. The tremors were confirmed by the INGV operations center in Naples. Accordingly, the quake on Monday reached a magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter scale. This means that the earthquake is in the area that residents can feel. However, with this strength there is rarely any damage. Still, the quake caused concern. Especially since two earthquakes with magnitudes of 1.4 and 1.9 were already measured on Sunday. The quake is part of a so-called seismic swarm.

The quake triggered a state of alarm among residents of Pozzuoli, Baia, Bacoli and Monte di Procida as well as in the districts of Bagnoli, Agnano and Fuorigrotta. No damage has been reported so far. Nevertheless, many residents went outdoors – despite the rain.

Mayor confirms new seismic swarm in southern Italy

According to the mayor of Bacoli, Josi Gerardo Della Ragione, Monday’s quake was “strong, lasted several seconds and was felt throughout the city.” He is therefore in contact with civil protection. Mayor also confirmed: “A new seismic swarm is underway. The situation is being constantly monitored.” He reported in the post on Facebook that there was no damage to people or buildings.

Back in 2011, researchers used a simulation to show how a volcanic eruption might occur in the region. This representation leads to great uncertainty in view of the increasing number of earthquakes. Since the area is densely populated, a disaster might occur.
